How to spot a fake visa or ETA site

Search “UK ETA” or “ESTA” and many results are private companies dressed up as the government. They take your passport details and charge several times the official fee for the same form. Here are the official addresses and fees, and how to tell the difference.

Signs you’re not on the official site

  • The price is higher than the official fee, often with a “service”, “processing” or “expert review” charge. No one can buy you a faster or more certain decision.
  • The address isn’t the official one above. Look-alike sites use words like “online”, “apply”, “visa”, “eta” or a country name in a .com, .org or .net address. Government sites end in the government’s own domain (for example .gov, .gov.uk, .europa.eu, .gc.ca, .gov.au, .govt.nz, .go.kr, .gov.il).
  • It’s a search ad. The top results for a travel authorization are often paid ads. Type the official address yourself or use our links.
  • Small print says “we are not affiliated with the government” at the bottom of the page.
  • You’re asked to pay for a free form, such as an arrival card.

Already paid a look-alike site?

  1. Check whether you actually have a valid authorization: most official systems let you look up your status on the official site with your passport details.
  2. If you don’t, apply again on the official site. Don’t travel without confirmation.
  3. Ask your card issuer about disputing the charge, and report the site to your consumer protection authority (in the U.S., the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov).
