Passport rules
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the day you arrive, with 2 blank pages, and you must enter and leave on the same passport. Canada’s advice is stricter: 6 months after you leave.
Blank pages: 2 (GOV.UK advice).
- Canadians: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the day you leave.
Airlines check this at check-in. If your passport is close to the limit, renew it first: see the 6-month passport rule explained.
Changing planes in Vietnam
- U.S. citizens: No airside transit: entry rules apply. We could not confirm an airside transit rule from an official page. Connecting to a domestic flight in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City means passing immigration, so treat any connection as entry.
- British citizens: Nothing extra if you stay airside. The 45-day visa exemption covers you either way.
- Canadians and Australians: No airside transit: entry rules apply. We could not confirm an airside transit rule from an official page; treat any connection as entry.
- EU citizens: Nothing extra if you stay airside. Citizens of the 18 visa-exempt EU countries are covered by the 45-day exemption. Others: we could not confirm an airside transit rule, so treat a connection as entry.

- Phu Quoc island allows visa-free stays of up to 30 days for foreign passport holders arriving directly there.
- A digital pre-arrival information form is being piloted at Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat Airport; it is optional for now. Use only the official site, prearrival.immigration.gov.vn.

Where official sources differ
- Passport validity: GOV.UK and Vietnam’s foreign ministry count 6 months from arrival; the Government of Canada says 6 months after you leave. The stricter reading is safer.
- Vietnam’s foreign ministry exemption list is out of date; we follow the government decision of August 15, 2025 (Resolution 229) that added 12 countries.
