Entry rules
Mexicoentry requirements
U.S. citizens don’t need a visa to visit Mexico as tourists. The immigration officer decides how many days you get, up to 180, and your passport must be valid for your whole stay. The same applies to British, Canadian, Australian and EU citizens.

Passport rules
Your passport must be valid for your whole stay (GOV.UK, Government of Canada). Mexico’s embassy in the UK recommends at least 180 days of validity, because that is the longest tourist stay.
Airlines check this at check-in. If your passport is close to the limit, renew it first: see the 6-month passport rule explained.
Changing planes in Mexico
- All these passports: Nothing extra if you stay airside. No visa needed for these passports. If your connection goes through the United States, you need an ESTA or U.S. visa (U.S. citizens and Canadians excepted).

Arrival card
Fill in the Mexico entry record (FMM) online before you cross a land border, or digitally when you arrive by air. Arriving by land, fill in the FMM online before you reach the border and print it. Arriving by air, your entry is recorded with a passport stamp or at an e-gate; keep the record of how many days you were given.

Good to know
- Mexico’s entry fee for non-residents (DNR) is normally included in air and cruise tickets. Arriving by land, you pay it unless you are a tourist staying 7 days or less.
- Visiting Cancún, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel or elsewhere in Quintana Roo? Every foreign tourist, including children, must pay the state’s VISITAX online at visitax.gob.mx; you show proof when you fly out.
- A departure tax may apply; most airlines include it in the ticket price.

Where official sources differ
- Arriving by air: the Government of Canada says to complete the digital FMM online on arrival; GOV.UK says you can download digital proof of entry from the INM portal within your first 60 days.
